Originally founded in 1968 by Buzz Potamkin, Candy Kugel and Vincent Cafarelli as Perpetual Motion Pictures, renamed to Buzzco Associates in 1983. While Potamkin left the following year to form the Los Angeles branch of Southern Star Productions, Cafarelli, Kugel and Marilyn Kraemer continued to use the name to make independent animated children's films.
