This most popular of animated mavens got her start in the Talkartoon short Dizzy Dishes as an unnamed anthropomorphic woman with dog ears and hound-like jowls.... and she only appeared in one scene in the short. When she appeared in 1931's Silly Scandals she had gained her name. By 1932's Any Rags she was a star- she is now fully humanized and had her name emblazoned on the title card. By the end of the year, Fleischers' new star left Talkertoons for her own series which ran until 1939. Boop was a uniquely sexualized cartoon character. Compared to her contemporaries, she was overtly female- and she appealed strongly to an adult male audience. The Production Code of 1934 imposed guidelines on what would be allowed in films, and Betty Boop was one of the biggest targets. When the code went into effect on July 1, 1934, Betty was no longer a carefree flapper, morphing into a husbandless housewife or a career girl. Her clothes became more tame and proper, her innuendos gone.
These post-34 cartoons were mild compared to her earlier appearances. Their self-conscious wholesomeness moved the aim of the series from adults to a more juvenile audience Betty became little more than a co-star to the other characters ion her films, and the decline of the series was obvious to all.
