ORTF traces it's way back to the formation of a public broadcasting monopoly in France with the formation of Radio Diffusion Française (RDF) in 1945. Television was added to the mandate in 1949, and the company was renamed Radiodiffusion-Télévision Française (RTF). The final rename happened in 1964, when the company became ORTF, short for Office de Radiodiffusion-Télévision Française. On August 8 1974, the ORTF was dissolved and broken up into 7 constituent parts.
