Cartoon Production Information:

This TV series ran for at least 800 episodes.

Created in 1990 by Yoshihito Usui for "Manga Action" magazine.

Most episodes are split into three unrelated chapters.

The series parodies anime shows: "Action Mask" is spoofed as "Action Kamen," while "Gundam" is parodied as "Kuntam Robo."

The series caused a controversy when it was jokingly claimed that as many as 68% of children under 12 were regular viewers. The joke fell flat when complaints were made in the Japanese media that the show was turning small children into lechers.

A series of seven 90-minute movies based on the TV show was aimed at a young audience. The first, "Action Kamen vs. Evil High-Leg," was released in 1993. Other movies were "Adventures in Henderland" (1996); "The Search for the Black Balls" (1997), which introduced Shin-chan's baby sister Himawari and featured a cameo role for Usui; "Attack! War of the Pig's Trotter" (1998), "Dazzling Hot Spring Wars" and "Paradise Made in Saitama" (both 1999), which were each split into two chapters, a vacation episode and a cyberspace satire; "Storm in the Jungle" (1999), which appeared on a few subtitled broadcasts on a Japanese community TV station in Hawaii; and "The Storm Is Calling! The Adult Empire Strikes Back" (2001).

Traditional, Hand-drawn Animation.
