Animal Cracker Circus 4 out of 5 stars

Charles Mintz Studio

Reviewed by: Mitchell Dakelman,

In this pleasant and little known Technicolor cartoon from the Mintz studios, a baby boy in his high chair is treated to a performance by animal cracker characters provided if he eats his spinach, initially fed to him by the ringmaster who promises him a show. The circus characters are flat just like the cookie animal crackers, but all come alive for this delightful performance. As the boy tires, a growling animal cracker lion escapes and runs with the pet dog. Finally, mom puts junior to bed, with the doggie jumping in to sleep with him, while the little cookie lion watches. It kind of gave me a tear to my eye, as my dog little Hankie who passed away at age 13 in April, would also jump in bed to be with me. I recently discovered the cartoon on a reel of 16mm shorts that I had purchased several years ago, and decided to finally see what was on the reel. Sadly, the beginning is missing and is a black and white copy.
