The Spinach Roadster Story Detail
Bluto competes with Popeye for Olive's attention. The confrontation has Popeye's jalopy trying to compete with the sex appeal of Bluto's muscle car. Popeye's singing to himself about his automobile as he pulls in front of Olive's house to take Olive for a drive. Just then, Bluto pulls up in a swanky new Art Deco car and calls Popeye's ride a "piece of junk." He asks Olive if she'd like to take a ride in "a good car," but she refuses and goes with Popeye. Bluto drives on ahead of them and rearranges a sign in the road so that Popeye and Olive must climb a steep cliff, but his plot backfires when Popeye's car dislodges some boulders, which topple on Bluto himself. (These scenes include some of the Fleischer Studios' famous three-dimensional effects.) Undaunted, Bluto throws a wrench at Popeye's car. The gas tank ruptures, bringing the car to a halt. A fistfight ensues (of course) while a hapless Olive finds herself in Popeye's car as it careens down a mountainside. Popeye pops open his spinach can, eats the spinach, defeats Bluto and rescues Olive Oyl in the nick of time.
