The Green Man Of Knowledge: A Story From Scotland Story Detail
Off to seek his fortune on his 21st birthday, Jack happens upon a friendly robin and learns that he has entered the Land of Enchantment, strictly ruled by the Green Man of Knowledge. Jack meets the Green Man, who challenges Jack to a "real game": Jack will receive as much gold as he can carry if he successfully completes three challenges. However, if Jack is unsuccessful, he will pay with his life. Jack accepts. On his way to his first challenge, Jack meets Malmhin, a gentle and helpful friend, but also the daughter of the Green Man. In Jack's first challenge, he must climb to the top of an enormous tree to retrieve a pearl. For his second challenge, Jack must go to the bottom of a deep well and return with a ring. Jack's final and most difficult challenge requires him to create a bigger and better castle for the Green Man. With the help of the robin and Malmhin, Jack is successful at all three tasks. When the Green Man realizes that Jack has benefited from the help of his own daughter, he is enraged. Malmhin transforms into a horse and takes off with Jack to escape the wrath of the Green Man. Malmhin instructs Jack to return home and promises that she will come to him in a year and a day. During that time, Jack is to allow no one to kiss him or it will erase his memory of Malmhin and the Land of Enchantment. When Jack returns, he is greeted by this mother and receives a slobbery kiss from his dog, erasing his memory. Jack does not remember Malmhin when she returns to him, but helps Jack to remember when she realizes that he was kissed by his dog. Reunited and full of memories, Jack and Malmhin live "happily ever after."
