Popeye's first official cartoon
Reviewed by: mikelacy Posted: February 10, 2003
This cartoon, the first in the Popeye series, was released on 9-29-33; just 3 months after the sailor's debute in POPEYE THE SAILOR (Betty Boop cartoon # 14). It begins with Bluto singing "Strike Up the Band for Popeye the Sailor" over the opening credits. Popeye, Olive, and Wimpy, are seemingly discovering the new world in this cartoon, as when they land on shore there are no building etc. Popeye is forced to build a log cabin into which he is invited by Wimpy to "Come in for a duck dinne...you bring the ducks!" Popeye goes in search of the ducks and is ambushed by the several Indians featured in the cartoon. The Indianas meanwhile have attacked the cabin and Olive Oyl is fighting them off, quite successfully, while screamning for Popeye to come to the rescue. In one delightful gag Popeye is walking along smoking as the ducks follow him inhaling the smoke from his pipe! The Big Cheif then attempts to scalp Popeye who subdues the Indians, and then knocks the Big Chief onto a boulder where he turns into a caracature of Ghandi! The musical score is well chosen and the animation quite good, considering we have to endure Dave Fleischer's "moving hold" bobbling throughout.
