Peace on Earth 5 out of 5 stars

THE greates Christmas cartoon ever made.....proof positive that Hugh Harman's a sadly-underrated director.
The elimination of any mention of the Nativity in the opening rendition of "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" is redeemed by the intact lyrics to "Silent Night" at the tail end. The cartoon's point is that there IS no point in "peace on earth, good will to MAN" any longer. This was a visionary cartoon which was well aware of the unrest and tragedy in most of the rest of the world, and our blissful unawareness which would, in a long two years, finally end. Then it'll probably only be God & His animals.

Even over 60 years after its making this cartoon is more timeless then ever. With all the talk these days of weapons of mass destruction, seeing the images of the final two gas-masked combatants is even more haunting. Hopefully MGM will get their act together and release this one on DVD soon.

This is one of the best cartoons ever made. My son was twelve years old the first time he saw it and it really moved him. The story is truly moving.
