Then and Now

This cartoon was very popular when it was released in late 1958; it came across as a 'different' Bugs-Elmer duel thanks to a hairy Elmer Fuddstone (who had a new voice). The music was comfortably familiar to those who watched Huckleberry Hound on TV (a musicians' strike forced Warner's to use the same stock music as Hanna-Barbera). Seen today, it's not so hot. The voice characterizations of Fudd and Fuddstone are inferior to what Arthur Q. Bryan normally provided for Elmer, the gags are mildly amusing at best, and one wishes that the regular musicians had stayed on the job. But the backgrounds are handsome and the direction is competent enough to earn a rating of 'fair.'

This would have been a half decent effort had Arthur Q. Bryan done Elmer's voice for this one.
