Looney Tunes Begins!!!
After the "pilot" short Bosko The Talk-Ink Kid (Rudolf Ising & Hugh Harman, 1929), Leon Schlesinger brought the boys to Warner Brothers Studios and launched Looney Tunes, a take-off on Walt Disney's Silly Symphonies. The purpose of the shorts was to use music culled from Warner Bros. Film Catalogue in order to advertise for the films. Bosko was chosen to be the headliner and in this first cartoon, we are introduced to his girlfriend Honey. The animation couldn't be more simplistic, but the pure joy held by the characters is undeniable. Honey dancing on the notes, Bosko playing his shower stream like a harp, the car using the outhouse... This is the Looney Tunes standard in its infancy and the future and potential looks grand in front of it. The cartoon is far from perfect but many of the signatures and staples to come were first seen here.
