Production Notes:
Based on the true story of Sadako Sasaki, who was two years old when her native city of Hiroshima was hit by an atomic bomb at the close of World War II. Contracting leukemia a decade later, she was told by a friend of a legend which said that anyone who folds a thousand paper cranes would be granted a wish. Hoping that the gods would grant her a wish to get well so she could run again, she folded several hundred cranes before dying in 1955 at age 12. Her story inspired young people throughout Japan to raise money for a statue at Hiroshima Peace Park.
The animation was inspired by Miho Cibot-Shimma, a Japanese woman living in France, who saw children in her adopted country playing "atomic war games" and decided to publicize the evils of nuclear war. In 1989, her Japanese friends started fundraising to make this film.
Shown in Japan on a double bill with "Kayoko's Diary."
Through subtitled screenings at film festivals, this anime has been given very limited exposure in the United States.
English Titles:
"On A Paper Crane" and "Riding A Crane."
