Production Notes:

First cartoon appearance of Popeye The Sailor, a character in Elzie Segar's "Thimble Theatre" comic strip. His cartoons would eventually account for most of the Fleischers' cartoon production.

It has been said that Roland (Doc) Crandall animated the cartoon in secret because Max's hunch that this cartoon was going to a hit proved correct. The secrecy aspect could also be the fact that Roy Disney was at the time luring Fleischer animators away to California with promises of double the pay they were making in New York.

The song that is performed over the cartoon's title credits is "Strike The Band For Popeye The Sailor," and is performed by Bonnie Poe and Gus Wickie.

The A.A.P. credit replaced by Paramount. The live-action opening newspaper title is still in black and white in the colorized version.

Popeye's very first animated words: "Well, blow me down."
