Jerry Seinfeld conceived the idea for "Bee Movie" after a years-long courtship of the comic by the studio. He relented after conversations with DreamWorks chiefs Steven Spielberg and Jeffery Katzenberg. Seinfeld ran into Spielberg in the Hamptons in the summer of 2002 and began discussing ideas for animated films. Spielberg reportedly liked Seinfeld's concept, and Katzenberg came on to formally develop it.

"I have always been fascinated by bee society, the world's most harmoniously run organization, and now I finally am going to be in it... The enthusiasm of Jeffrey and Steven for this idea is the main reason I decided to do it," said Seinfeld.

Seinfeld's first major professional project since his eponymous comedy series ended in 1998.
