Live action with an animated sequence.
The animated sequence, "Dental Hygiene Dilemma," was based on Mothers of Invention member Jeff Simmons, who had recently quit the "comedy group" to form his own band. The sequence has also variously been credited to Cal Schenkel and Chuck Swenson.
This was the first major motion picture release to use video to shoot and assemble footage, which was later transferred to film (in this case, 35mm). Shot on videotape at Pinewood Studios in London, England.
Intended by Frank Zappa to be a live concert, "200 Motels" was filmed after received a charge in the United Kingdom of being an "obscene libretto" in the UK and was canceled.
