This was the first cartoon co-produced in China and Japan.
This was originally released as a theatrical feature, shown on a double bill with the live-action film "Tora-san's Promise."
This film was followed by a television series (with the same name) of 50 25-minute episodes on TV Osaka. Directors were Shuichi Nakahara, Kazuhiko Ikegami and Taku Sugiyama; writers were Keiji Kubota, Takeshi Shudo, Nobuko Morita and Osamu Kagami; Masao Kumagawa was the animator; Yasuo Tsuchida was the composer.
Many crew members were later involved in the 1983 Japanese-German co-production "Taotao Ehonkan Sekai Dobutsu Banashi" ("Taotao's Library- World Animal Stories"). This also starred a panda named Taotao.
