The first recorded film involving Hayao Miyazaki.
The TV series Ôkami Shônen Ken- not this film, as often stated- appears to mark Miyazaki's first animated work (the first episode predates Wanwan Chushingura by a month).
Based on an idea by executive producer Osamu Tezuka.
The story has its origins in the kabuki play Chushinugura (also known as Treasury of Loyal Retainers or The 47 Ronin), which appeared in its earliest known form in 1706.
