Based on Takashi Yanase's original 1973 illustrations for Froebel Kan, a Japanese chain store. Before the TV series ran, Anpanman stories ran in such publications as "Mommy," "New Baby" and "Baby Book."
Several short movies have been released, including "The Disappearance of Uncle Jam," "Anpanman in the South Seas," "The Secret of Breadrollman" and "Christmas with the Meringue Sisters."
The 12th movie, "Anpanman and the Mermaid's Tears" (2000), parodied "Little Mermaid." Characters included Sunny.
"Omususubiman" ("Riceball-man"), released as a 27-minute theatrical short in 2000, was Yanase's introduction of another food-related superhero.
