This short took 13 months to complete at a cost of nearly $5 million.
This film is set after the 1999 live-action feature The Matrix, but before the 2003 live-action sequel The Matrix Reloaded. The same writers were involved in all three projects.
Although it is the last in the "Animatrix" series of nine animated short subjects connected with The Matrix, this was the first one released. The nine episodes from seven anime directors are scheduled for DVD and VHS release on June 3, 2003.
The Final Flight of Osiris was shown across North America, and was attached to all prints of the Warner Bros./Castle Rock live-action feature Dreamcatcher.
Studio executives had originally thought of releasing The Final Flight of Osiris for a theatrical re-release of The Matrix. However, Lawrence Kasdan suggested that the short appear before his picture, Dreamcatcher, to garner more business for the feature film.
The release date is the date of general release in theaters. The cartoon actually debuted at the "Enter the Matrix" debut party on February 4, 2003.
A series of cartoon magazines published in the 1980s was also titled "Animatrix."
