Rankin Bass Studios produced an animated version of Smokey the Bear earlier in the 1966 TV special "The Ballad of Smokey the Bear." New character designs were introduced for this series.
Background music from "The King Kong Show" was reused for this series.
This was the first cartoon show with an ecological theme. The show ran 17 episodes. Each half-hour show includes two cartoons featuring the adult Smokey, with a cartoon of Smokey as a bear cub in between.
