The actual editorial on which this cartoon is based appeared in the New York Sun on September 21, 1897. It was reprinted annually in the newspaper until 1949, when the publication went out of business.

Courtney Lemmon, who provides the voice of Virginia, is the daughter of Oscar-winning actor Jack Lemmon.
