Three 25-minute mini-features were released theatrically in 2000 as holiday specials in Japan. These were combined for release in the United States as the "Digimon Movie." The Screen Actors Guild in the U.S. launched a legal challenge to production company Saban over residual rights for the movie, arguing that voice acting was a skill that deserved better working conditions.
Afterward, a second season was named "Digimon 02" and ran for 50 20-minute episodes. Set three years later, it introduced the character Buimon.
"Digimon Tamers," a third series, started in April 2001. It was set in the "near-future" year of 200X.
