The first digitally animated short film produced by Sony Imageworks. The concept emerged when Imageworks launched its own animation division. "We created The ChubbChubbs as sort of a test for the (computer-generated) feature pipeline," said producer Jacquie Barnbrook.

Though there was some talk in 2003 of a feature length treatment of these characters, no feature was ever produced. A sequel, The ChubbChubbs Save Xmas was produced in 2007.
