Patty and Selma are introduced, and Santa's Little Helper joins the family. Ned and Todd Flanders, the Simpsons' next-door neighbors, are introduced.

A few changes on some characters during the 1st seaosn: Homer still has his Walter Matthau-like voice from "The Tracey Ullman Show" shorts. Barney has yellow hair instead of brown hair. Moe has black hair and a nasally voice instead of his gray hair and his gruff-speaking voice. Mr. Burns sounds more like a tougher boss. Waylon Smithers can be heard on the speaker at the Plant but does not appear.
