Nighttime scenes were uncommon in digital animated films until Pixar set off to explore the territory in this short film. But this challenge alone wasn't enough- the creative team had to add raindrops, juggling and its first "organic" character, Lumpy the Clown, to the mix.
The film premiered at the July 1987 SIGGRAPH (ACM Special Interest Group on Computer Graphics) convention in Anaheim, California. The film has won awards at the Zagreb World Festival of Animation and the San Francisco International Film Festival, among others.
On the wall near the Clearance Section, a clock with a picture of André from the short The Adventures of André and Wally B. and a Luxo lamp can be seen.
Red's Dream appears on a book in Toy Story (along with The Adventures of André, Tin Toy, and knickknack). Red and Lumpy appear on the television screen in Toy Story 2.
Red is seen in WALL•E as part of his collection, right after he is launched into the side of his home.
