Production halted in 2001.
Aardman spokesman Arthur Sheriff said that the company rushed into production on Tortoise as soon as Chicken Run was completed, but now realizes that the script was not developed enough.
Sheriff continued, "Chicken Run was in development for 2 1/2 years, but we've had just 16 months on Tortoise. We hate to make all these people redundant, but it means we will be able to flesh out the characters more and make a better film."
Aardman's Nick Park favors shelving Tortoise all together in favor of a Wallace and Gromit feature. That feature ended up being produced as Wallace & Gromit: The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit.
The film was temporarily revived in 2006, set to go into production after Flushed Away, but the project never fully found it's feet.
