This TV series ran for 56 episodes. Of these, 26 were shown in the United States as part of the "Force Five" anime block (Those episodes are listed separately under "Danguard Ace".)
Based on an idea by Jeff Matsumoto (supposedly his answer to giant-robot shows made by fellow manga artists Go Nagai and Shotaro Ishinomori) and Dan Kobayashi.
Kobayashi may have given his name to the series, as well as to hero Captain Dan.
Due to the new popularity of anime, the first two episodes were re-released on video in Japan. The series was also reissued in a laserdisc collection titled "Leiji Matsumoto Theater."
"Dangard A: Great War in Spacee" was a 1978 episode made especially for theatrical release in Japan.
