Based on a semi-autobiographical novel by Akiyuki Nosaka, whose own sister died from malnutrition during the Second World War.
Reportedly, producer Toshio Suzuki used the original novel to sell theater tickets to schools, enabling him to release "My Neighbor Totoro" on a double bill with this film.
Soundtrack: "Home Sweet Home," Performed By Amelita Galli-Curci, Courtesy Of RCA Victor Red Seal, a Division Of BMG Classics.
