Based loosely on a three-part series that director-writer Hayao Miyazaki wrote in 1990 for "Model Graphix" magazine.
Originally conceived as a 45-minute in-flight feature for Japan Air Lines, it was produced as a full-length film, and a dub was made for the English-language audio channel on JAL flights. Later, it was broadcast on British TV.
At the time of its release, this was the fourth-largest animated box-office draw in Japanese history, beaten only by two Pokemon films and "Princess Mononoke."
Miyazaki was an avid aviation buff; his airplane designs conformed scrupulously to the technology of the period.
