Elements of this film reflect director Hayao Miyazaki's personal life. It is set in the countrieside, where he spent his childhood. The story features a bedridden parent; Miyazaki's mother suffered from spinal tuberculosis.
This is one of a very few films whose tie-ins and spinoffs were created by subsequent audience demand, rather than as a publicity scheme.
A dub released in the United States in 1994 was actually made in 1989.
The furry, multi-pawed Catbus. The latter is a nod to Lewis Carroll's Cheshire Cat; the Totoros, oversized panda-like creatures with bunny ears, are based on Miyazaki's own childhood imaginings.
The voice of the Catbus in the English version was provided by Carl Macek, producer of the U.S. version for Streamline Pictures.
A 10-minute short anime, "Mei and the Kittenbus," was scheduled to premiere in 2001 at Tokyo's new Studio Ghibli Museum.
