Jointly produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions and Tsuburaya Productions, this TV-movie was intended as a pilot for an animated series. However, no such series resulted.

This was the first Ultraman production made in the United States.

Tsuburaya Productions had asked Hanna-Barbera to produce this film as a live-action TV-movie, but Hanna-Barbera persuaded the studio that an animated film would be better.

Foreign Language Titles: "Urutoraman Yū Esu Ē (Japan)" and "ウルトラマンUSA (Japan)."
