Production Notes:
This rotoscope film was the Czech Republic's entry in the foreign-language film category at the Oscars.
Based on "Alois Nebel," the first modern graphic novel to be published in the Czech Republic. It began as a single volume, "Bílý Potok," which appeared in 2003. After its initial success, two more volumes followed - "Central Station" and "Zlaté Hory" -- completing a trilogy which was released as a single collection in 2006. The story is captured in raw, black-and-white drawings, illustrating contrasts between the narrative tone and history. Artist Jaromír 99 was inspired by American comics of the 1950s, socialist realism and motifs from traditional paper cutouts, which remain a typical form of folk art in the Czech mountain region of Jeseník. To date, it has also been published in Germany and Poland.
