Based on five "really dark and sad" stories from Japanese animator Yoshihiro Tatsumi's autobiography, "A Drifting Life" (the short stories Hell, Beloved Monkey, Just A Man, Occupied, and Good Bye) and interweaving them with his subject's personal narrative about growing up in post-WWII Japan.
A huge admirer of Tatsumi's work, director Khoo's goal here was to create as accurate a representation of the master's work as possible on screen. The goal was not to interpret, not to adapt, but to take the images on the printed page and bring them to life on screen as Tatsumi created them.
Khoo's first animated feature film.
