Peter Sellers returns as the hapless Inspector Clouseau in his second Pink Panther film. This frenetic comedy introduces Herbert Lom as Clouseau's long-suffering superior Dreyfus and Burt Kwouk as his mysterious manservant and sparring partner Cato.
Live-action film with animated title sequence by DePatie-Freleng Enterprises. Letters used in the main title resembled the "random" lettering of a ransom note.
This was the only official Inspector Clouseau film that used neither the name Pink Panther nor the cartoon character of that name in the opening credits. It was based on a 1961 Broadway play by Harry Kurnitz which didn't feature the Inspector. However, after United Artists bought the rights, the Clouseau character was included in the movie.
Reportedly, the preview audience loved the opening sequence featuring Inspector Clouseau so much that it gave the cartoon a standing ovation. The theater had to stop the movie until everyone piped down.
A woman briefly appears naked in the animated title. This was inspired by the "Camp Sunshine" nudist colony sequence in the film.
Henry Mancini's atmospheric "mystery" theme music for this film was used in the 1968-69 DFE series "The Inspector." In later animated appearances, the Inspector was redesigned to look more like Clouseau.
The Brothers Matzoriley (Weft, Wong and White) first appeared in the titles for this film. They would reappear in "The Great DeGaulle Stone Operation" (1968), the first cartoon in DFE's theatrical "The Inspector" series. They also starred in their own DFE series, "The Brothers Matzoriley," in 1966-67.
George Dunning, who directed the animated opening, later directed the animated feature film "Yellow Submarine" (1968), starring The Beatles.
Release date is that for the United States; United Kingdom release date was January 28, 1965 in London.
Soundtrack: "Shadows of Paris," Music by Henry Mancini, Lyrics by Robert Wells.
