This TV series ran for 65 episodes in its first incarnation.
Based on the series of children's books written by Finnish author Tove Jansson between 1945 and 1971.
Jansson protested against the style of this series, as he was opposed to minor incidents of violence and the appearance of such anachronisms as automobiles.
Because of Janssons concerns, production was shifted from Tokyo Movie Shinsha to Mushi Productions 26 episodes into the series. This was folowed up by second series, called "New Moomins." This second series ran for 52 episodes. Although Janssen was happier with the designs and stories in the new series, the first series was more popular with Japanese viewers.
In 1990, a third series, "Tanoshii Moomon Ikka" ("Happy Moomin Family"), was released. This remake by Hiroshi Saito aired for 78 episodes on TV Tokyo. In 1991, starting with Episode 79, the series was renamed "Tanoshii Moomin Ikka Boken Nikki" ("Happy Moomin Family Adventure Diary"), with the directors changed to Takeyuki Kanda and Tsuneo Tominaga.
Jansson's "Comet in Moominland" was adapted theatrically in 1992 as Hiroshi Saito and Masayuki Kojima's 62-minute "Moomin Tani Suisei." This was released on video with 10 minutes of added footage.
The BBC dubbed 28 episodes of the latest series for the United Kingdom market. It was broadcast on Hawaii's K5 channel as "Tales of Moomin Valley."
