Cartoon Production Information:

Pixie and Dixie showcased the ongoing struggle of two mice trying to outmaneuver Mr. Jinks the cat, who, incidentally, hated "meeces to pieces." Jinks, however, proved to be so lovable that he often won a few rounds against the mischievous "meeces."

This was a segment on "The Huckleberry Hound Show."

Traditional, Hand-drawn Animation.

Commentary:

Plot: Dixie pretends to be a ghost after Jinks bashes him with a coal scuttle. A frightened Jinks acts as a slave to Pixie until he finds out the truth and tries the ghost bit himself.

Cast: Jinks, Dixie - Daws Butler; Pixie - Don Messick.

Ken Muse did the animation here, with Bick Bickenbach laying out the cartoon and Bob Gentle handling the backgrounds.

This cartoon just reeks of sloppiness in places. Possibly the worst bit is in the scene below, where not only does Jinks poke Dixie with his left hand for a few frames (and his mouth vanishes), his mouth can be seen in a couple of shots where it should be behind his hand.

And one of my favourite Jinks takes of all time is another H-B time-saver (below left). It looks like the shaking was accomplished by alternating frames of a shaken Jinx with a normal one and turning it into a cycle.

The smear-ish animation (above right) works well, too.

Today's Pixie and Dixie count is: TEN. That's how many times they go past the same window in the opening scene.

Daws turns in another fine performance here. You can't help but laugh at him doing Jinks doing a lousy ghost impression. He channels Mr. Kitzel from the Jack Benny show with a "Hoo hoo HOO!" looking through the window. When Jinks hands Pixie some cake, Daws captures Jinks perfectly with his reading of "Service with a smile" as weak and hopeful that he's appeased the "ghost". And Daws always finds a way to make an ordinary word sound sillier. He emphasized the 'b' in "crumbles" to good effect.

You just knew that Bill Loose and John Seely's Sublime Ghost would end up in the soundtrack. Loose wrote a whole side of "Ghost" cuts for the Capitol Hi-Q Library. Several of them appeared on the Looney Tune Gopher Broke, but "Sublime" was the one that was used fairly often in the early Hanna Barbera cartoons.
