Release date is that of world premiere in Belgium. North American premiere is December 9, 2011 in Quebec, with release date in the rest of Canada and the United States on December 21, 2011.
The second feature in the series is scheduled to be directed by Peter Jackson, with a potential for a third film as well.
Steven Spielberg first acquired rights to the Tintin stories after Hergé's death in 1983. When he was unable to greenlight a project in four years, the rights reverted to the Hergé Foundation. Various studios tried to acquire the rights, but Spielberg was finally able to re-optioned them in 2002.
In August 2008, about a month before photography was to begin, Universal pulled out of its funding/producing/distribution deal with Paramount. Jackson and Spielberg shopped the property to Sony, who opted to co-produce the films, with distribution rights to Europe, South America and India. Photography finally began in January 2009, with release pushed back to the holiday season of 2011. This delay resulted in the original Tintin, Thomas Sangster, being replaced by Jamie Bell.
