At the moment where, encouraged by Astérix, he offers her flowers, she falls into the arms of her fiance, Tragicomix, breaking Obélix's heart.
Meanwhile, in Rome, the organizer of the Games of the Coliseum, Caius Obtus, tries to reassure Caesar, and promises him that all the Roman Empire will send him gifts of submission.
During a romantic walk, Falbala and her fiance are taken away by an ignorant (but very enthusiastic)decurion. Frightened, the head of the Roman camp sends them to the Legion, in the Sahara.
After destroying the local Roman camp, Astérix and Obélix, followed by Idéfix, decide to join the Legion in order to find the captives. After some abnormally brief training, they come to the Roman camp, situated in the desert, from which Obélix and Falbala have just escaped.
But the other pair- Astérix and Obélix- are imprisoned by slave merchants and sent to Rome, where a delighted Caius Obtus can finally present Caesar with two inseparable Gauls who will be offered to the lions in the Coliseum. There, presumably, the two will be separated permanently.
Astérix and Obélix continue to follow the fiances' tracks right up to Caius Obtus in Rome, but they lose track of them; they also are separated from the dog Idéfix and their gourd of magic potion. They decide to become gladiators to be able to get into the Coliseum.
Once in the arena, after a race marked by overturned chariots and the unexpected failure of the professional gladiators, Astérix and Obélix again find Falbala and Tragicomix- who are facing the lions without the magic potion.
At the last moment, Idéfix shows up with the lost gourd, and luck turns bad for Caesar: his "triumph" finishes in the general collapse of the Coliseum.
