Caspar the Gnome is endowed with Maru, the talisman, the magic earring which shines of itself and which he wears on his left ear. With the help of this charm he can pull a heavy cupboard out into the middle of the room, or can transport himself whenever he likes from one place to another, and perform the most surprising feats.
The talisman is the envy of the malicious hobgoblin of the Evil Mountain, called Sato, who always sits on a rotten stump of a tree, over the ill-gotten treasure trove, and watches over it jealously. Every now and then Sato whistles for his usual company of some loathsome creatures: the dull-eyed Avilo, who always looks half-asleep, the winged Lattopuck, the scaly Croco, the ponderous Ekoro the Unicorn munching toadstools. And a good many more.
Despite all this company, Sato is terribly bored. He keeps tormenting the poor, timid tiny sprites, called Mushies, who live in the brigand's pit under the stump, and are forced to run over the gold without stopping.
Obviously spitful Sato would like to have the talisman to do all the mischief he chose. However, he cannot steal Maru himself, for like every evil spirit guarding the ill-gotten treasure he is bound to it by the fate. Aiding him with the stealing of Maru is the mischevious Owl. She steals the talisman from the loft where it was left by Casp.
It turns out, however, that in the clutches of the evil spirit the talisman loses both its shining quality and its magic power, which infuriates Sato. The hobgoblin orders the kidnapping of Casp, in the hope that the secret of Maru's working could be extracted from the poor Gnome.
The little inhabitants of the Manor on the Mount, though filled with misgiving, decide to go and get Casp and Maru back from their much stronger enemy. To succeed, they have to do the two things simultaneously. Quite unexpectedly the water-elf Plash-Splash, an old friend of Casp, comes to their aid. His ruse to cause Sato to hang Maru on top of the tallest spruce in the area to "sun" it, so that it could recover its former power, is a great success.
After a hurried and tiring march, the expedition led by Clefie reaches Sato's hiding-place. They launch an attack on Sato and his loathsome cronies, while the valiant pigeon Philo snatches hold of the talisman. However, Sato and his army make a counterattack. Lattopuck catches the pigeon by his tail, and some othe evil spirits of the woods surround the rescuers. Caspar's fate and that of his comrades seem to hang in the balance. Luckily the pigeon swoops down straight on to Casp's breast at the last moment. The enchanted talisman touches the Gnome's hand. Maru instantly blazes out with a former brilliance, and the evil powers fade away and give up the pursuit, and turn back. The happy but tired army reaches the manor house before the sunset. Casp the Gnome promises that he will never, never lose the magic earring again. Also, the Mushies take advantage of the confusion and flee at full speed from their prison and disappear in the woods.
