Cartoon Comments:

Bugs and Daffy's "Carnival of the Animals" 9 out of 5 stars

a look at the classic era of cartoons

Reviewed by: Fandie Urkus, September 20, 2011

When this cartoon was released more than 30 years ago, writers were still attempting creative interpretations of the standards. Another excellent example is the 1972 CBS musical version of Dr.Seuss' "Cat in the Hat" with the voice of Alan Sherman as the cat.
Bugs and Daffy's "Carnival of the Animals" captures the spirit and wit of both the original musical piece plus the antics of the characters Bugs and Daffy, competing for audience favor with quotes from Ogden Nash's pun-filled poetry of the same. This takes the whole experience to a higher level of sophistication that brings adults into the game. Any shortcomings the reviewer may see in the cartoon work accompanying the musical selections must be forgiven when considering the piece as a whole. It is brilliant, AND the gag at the end is pretty funny.

Carnival of the Animals 6 out of 5 stars

Not Chuck Jones' greatest

Reviewed by: StevenBailey, February 29, 2004

The anticipation of seeing Chuck Jones "re-united" with his Looney Tunes rival-pair is considerably diminished once the cartoon gets underway. Sadly, most of this half-hour short consists of cutesy drawings that accompany the famous musical piece "Carnival of the Animals" (done in a much livelier manner in Disney's Fantasia 2000). The closing gag is pretty funny, though.
