Popeye The Sailor Meets Sindbad The Sailor was one of the better cartoons made by Fleischer Studios. I especially enjoyed the 3-D effeccts. By todays standards they are not that great, but still pretty good. By 1936 standards, they were outstanding. I also like the asides by Popeye. When he first ran into Sinbad, I also like the comedy relief supplied by Wimpy.

ONE OF OSCARS MAIN "OVERLOOKS"

I had to rate this cartoon as a five for many many reasons. First of all is the stunning Technicolor. The 3D backgraounds are amazing, and effective.

The animation is top drawer. When Bluto (Sindbad) is walking along and says "....when I say BOO..." In close up it is brilliant animation. Of course getting to hear Popeye sing the entire theme song is a treat.

This cartoon should have won the oscar because of its popularity, many theatres advertised it as a feature, and gave it billing over the live action feature. It's groundbreaking use of the sterioptical setbacks (Look for the typical Fliescher skulls). The superb animation. The tightly written story. The wonderful title song, plus a great score.

All these add up for superior entertainment, and keep in mind this was before Disney's SNOW WHITE and thus is the longest "cartoon" up to that time. Who's the most remarkable fellow? POPEYE of course and the Fleischer brothers who gave him to us in such a brilliant way.

I agree - this is a great cartoon. This is my favorite Popeye. The '3D' backgrounds were groundbreaking, so to speak. And the under-the-breath comments from Popeye are the best part! One of the more imaginative and well-written from Fleischer.

Up until this time. The Paramount/Fleischer "Popeye"Movie cartoons were shown in Black and White and lasted a few minutes. The short films were and still are funny. But by late November of l936.Mr.Max Fleischer and his staff felt. That It was time to do a special featurette version of the series.Hence.Our Superstrong Sailor went head to head with "The Abrabian Nights"most dreaded villian:"Sinbad".Here "Sinbad"is an arrogant, abusive recluse on a South Sea Isle.Who does little more than brag about his previous exploits and take his animosities on the prehistoric creatures that inhabit his atoll. But The Ego tripping "Sinbad"is in for a rude awakening?! When "Popeye"sings his praises. While sailing by "Sinbad's"island with "Olive"and"Wimpy" Aboard his ship.Angered and envey running thru his veins. The vendictive Sailor sends his giant Roc to sink "Popeye's"Ship and Bring "Olive"back as his prisoner."olive is Captured. But Not before Our hero heads for the Island and defeats The Roc,"Boola"The arguing two headed giant and Finally "Sinbad"Himself. The film is full of great sight gags, great color and fast pacing. There is even an original song"Who's The Most Remarkable Extra ordinary Fellow? Sinbad The Salior".And a funny opening title listing that would even please The Animator at Warner Bros.Termite Terrrace. It's too bad this cartoon didn't win the l937 Oscars.Because it deserved that award and more.Nostalgia Kid
