Cartoon Comments:

The Hyp-Nut-Tist 8 out of 5 stars

A rather amusing Popeye cartoon which presents quite an exaggerated concept of hypnosis. Bluto harasses Popeye and Olive with hypnosis until Popeye can stands no more and eats his spinach. One could almost accuse Popeye of starting the trouble in this one since he messes up Bluto's trick with the sound of his pipe and then laughs about it. Still, Bluto's reaction is way out of proportion, takes it out on Olive by making her think she's a chicken, and ultimately asks for Popeye's wrath. This is one of the few, if not the only, Popeye cartoon where our hero deliberately punches Olive Oyl! After thoroughly defeating Bluto, there is still one complication; Olive continues to be under Bluto's "spell" and keeps cackling like a chicken. Popeye's answer? Give Olive Oyl a good punch in the face to snap her out of it. And though accidental punches from Popeye in other films have summoned Olive's wrath, this deliberate punch earns Popeye lots of hugs and kisses. I guess women really is fickle. While this ending is sexist and violent, it was an excellent commentary on Popeye's limitations. A good punch was really all he had to offer any problem that got in the way. This is particularly reminiscent of the original Popeye character created by Seagar. (All color copies of this cartoon should be destroyed on sight).
