The release date noted above reflects the release date as currently acknowledged by the Walt Disney Company. Other sources- including some official Walt Disney Studios archival documentation- suggest June 2nd, 1929 and October 10th, 1929 as an alternate (and possibly more accurate!) release dates.

There is also a possibility that it was WWI because the cats are wearing helmets called pickelhaube which is what the Germans wore duing that war.

one of the funniest early mickey cartoons!
anarchic gags from beginning to the end, very entertaining. especially interesting is the timing which is by far not so monotonuos as with many of the early talkies. look at the sequence...  (read more)
