Cartoon Production Information:

The first Bugs Bunny theatrical short in 26 years, "Box-Office Bunny" was released to mark the year-long celebration of Bugs' 50th birthday.

This was a very ironic tribute to Bugs' 50th "birthday"- ironic in the way that Warner Bros. shortchanged director Darrell Van Citters (who also briefly did the revised version of the Bugs Bunny comic strip) in every way possible. But even at a very truncated five minutes, Bugs, Daffy, and Elmer work their magic.

Bugs is surprisingly nonchalant about having his rabbit hole paved over to make a parking lot for a multiplex. He pops into the theater to enjoy the movie gratis when who should come up the aisle by usher Elmer Fudd (usher??). Daffy Duck gets into the mix by sneaking into the theater with a fake ID (it figures), and the all-too-brief cartoon takes off from there, with surprisingly contemporary nods to rap music and slasher movies.

Van Citters would be the first to tell you it's not Bugs' finest moment, but he's done far worse (remember Pre-Hysterical Hare [1960]?). If Warner Bros. would quit short-changing its own icons, we could still have some classic cartoons.

Apparently, the Looney Tunes' Saturday morning show with the original toons had been so popular for so long that Warner Bros. thought that it would be a good idea to commision new projects featuring these characters. One problem though: Mel Blanc, the man...  (read more)
