Cartoon Production Information:
This feature was in production for over 15 years. Despite the massive array of talent involved in the production, the film ultimately fared poorly at the box office, and was officially a flop.
The studio attempted to imitate Disney. It hired Disney's Frank Thomas, Roger Allers and Ollie Johnson as animators, while songwriting brothers Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman were also Disney veterans.
Reportedly, Tokyo Movie Shinsha removed crew members from this production when they refused to toe the studio line; these included Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, who left early on due to "creative differences."
Although credited with the "screen concept," Ray Bradbury appears to have left the production early.
Yoshifumi Kondo worked on the first (1984) pilot, while the second (1987) pilot is credited to Osamu Dezaki. Both pilots are included as extras on the laserdisc release of this film.
