Title change was announced on April 22, 2010 by Disney chairman Rich Ross.

Reese Witherspoon was originally cast as Princess Merida, but replaced due to scheduling conflicts. Director and writer Brenda Chapman left the project in 2010, and was replaced by Mark Andrews.

This is PIXAR's first fairy tale story, and its first movie with a female protagonist. Original director Brenda Chapman said the fim will reflect her love of Hans Christian Andersen and the Brothers Grimm tales, as well as a reflection on raising her daughter.
