The importance of viewing classic animated cartoons in the proper context... 4 out of 5 stars

What the previous review fails to understand or appreciate is that the purpose this particular cartoon was to highlight a popular song; in this case, a popular holiday-themed song (in keeping with the winter theme of the cartoon-proper.)

This cartoon was one of a series of music-based shorts called "Screen Songs"; which, as it states in the BCDB entry, were first made in the late 1920's and early 1930's by the Fleischer Studio and then revived in the 1950's by their corporate successor, Famous Studios. The purpose of these cartoons was to promote popular songs of the day; although by the time of the series' revival, however, a lot of those songs were more or less "oldies".

While the cartoons in this series were actually quite popular in their day; it's understandable that, when viewed by contemporary audiences, they may not appeal to all tastes. American society and popular culture have, of course, changed dramatically since these cartoons were first released theatrically; and so when viewing them, one should do so with an awareness of the period during which they were produced.
