Well composed comical effect 8 out of 5 stars

This is a remarkable early Mickey Cartoon. The piano scene is dramatically really well composed. While the similar scene in "The Opry House" still attaches one gag to the next and has a more loose feeling to it, "The Jazz Fool" shows a more carefully planned but nonetheless still fresh kind of humour. Also Mickey's expressions are a bit refined. Really funny is also the performance of Horace Horse in the first part.

Design Troubles 8 out of 5 stars

In this cartoon you can clearly see the discontinuous design of Mickey's face, especially the eyes and eye-lids. In the more closer shots (during the "sad" melody) he's got a double outline of the "mask", a relict of the huge eyes of the very first days plus small eyelids in the center, except for the big pupil this is the same principle as with today's Mickey. At the end of the short he got his old eyes back again.

hurray!

one of the funniest early mickey cartoons!
anarchic gags from beginning to the end, very entertaining. especially interesting is the timing which is by far not so monotonuos as with many of the early talkies. look at the sequence when mickey wants to shoot the enemy with a toy gun!

i also like animated comic-fonts.

highly recommendable!
