Edwin Carp - I see possibilities! 6 out of 5 stars

This animated short by Richard Bazley is dry, funny, and shows potential for a series of follow-up adventures. His adaptation of the unfortunate events around a normal, everyday man who lives with his mother, is visually original. I could tell as I noticed some of the shots in quasi-3D, made with Macromedia Flash animation, that Richard was experimenting, testing the limits of the web-intended animation tool. He combined this technique with his hand drawn characters to complete the scenes. The story is admittedly dry, but I got it. I understood the matter-of-fact way this poor character relayed his little adventure in- and under -the attic of his house. Emerging technology allowed Richard to create this with a minimalistic approach, and some shots stood out as notable achievements. The track-in on Edwin's journal, and the 3D movements of the sets.

What I leave with is a desire to see more adventures, with the financial backing required to make it all stand out. I imagine even more every day challenges that unfortunately, get the better of poor Edwin Carp time and again. This is animation festival fare, and a reference for those who want to animate for their own enjoyment and satisfaction. The unique thing about this is, Richard is a professional animator as shown through my last post about him. And yet he found time and made the effort to produce and release a personal project.

3 Royal Crowns. Niche films at most get a 3 [out of 5 RCs] in my ratings system, which means they are the best in their genre according to me, but not necessarily something everyone has the capacity to appreciate.
