Coonskin

I was a production assistant for Bakshi Productions during the making of Coonskin. As with all of the Bakshi features, the film is better in parts than in whole. While the movie has vivid characters, some funny bits and amazig design, it fails to add up. Bakshi has a great visual sense but a flawed grasp of story dynamics. I want to make one thing clear. Ralph Bakshi is no racist.. Yes, it's caustic, biting and controversial. But that's what gives it it's edge. Retitled Streetfight, the film is well worth seing. Not by young children, however.

I was a production assistant for Ralph Bakshi during the production of Hey Goodlookin' In a very real sense, you've never seen the picture. After Paramount withdrew Bakshi's previous feature; Coonskin (1973), Warners got cold feet and delayed the release of Hey Goodlookin'. It was supposed to debut in 1977 but didn't see theaters untill 1982. Drastically re-edited to remove "controversial" elements, the released Goodlookin' is a pale shdow of Bakshi's original version. As Ralph intended it, Goodlookin' is one of his finest movies. As released, it's a disconnected and dissapointing missed opportunity.

Ruff And Reddy is among my earliest TV memories. While the show couldn't match the production values of Hanna-Barbera's Tom And Jerry, inventive writing, good characters and excellent performances by the voice artists combined to make Ruff and Reddy a well produced and entertaining show. I can still sing the theme song. "Get set, get ready,..."
